Shitei Gata
Deze kata worden tijdens het examen door de examinatoren gekozen. Dit zijn de verplichte Kata.
Chosen by the examining committee on gradings. They are the mandatory kata required.
Sentei Gata

 

 
Een Kata wordt gekozen vanaf 2e kyu t/m Sandan, meestal een keuze uit Bassai dai, Kanku dai, Jion of Empi. De keuzelijst wordt groter voor examens boven Sandan, en volledige kennis van de katas is verplicht. De keuze wordt door de kandidaat zelf gemaakt en zijn een essentieel onderdeel en vereiste om een examen met succes af te leggen.
One Kata is chosen, from 2nd Kyu to Sandan usually from Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Jion or Empi. The list grows for examinations above Sandan, and full knowledge of the katas is mandatory. These are selected by the candidate themselves, and are an essential element, and a prerequisite to successful completion of the exam.
Tokui Gata
Dit zijn de "Vrije Keuze" Kata voor graden hoger dan 3e kyu. De keuze wordt door de Kandidaat zelf gemaakt. Elk kata mag gekozen worden.
These are the 'free choice kata for grades above 3rd Kyu. Chosen by the candidate themselves. Any kata may be selected.

Beginners Kata  /  Novice Kata

 

Heian Shodan
Het woord Heian is een mengeling van de woorden Heiwan en Antei: " Vrede en Kalmte". De betekenis van het Kata duidt op een "Vreedzame Geest". De originele versies van de kata werden Pinans genoemd, echter Funakoshi veranderde de Chineese en Okinawa namen in Japanse benamingen tijdens het ontwikkelen van zijn stijl, hiermede verwijzende naar de meer filosofische betekenis.

Dit is de "Eerste Stap" of Shodan en is vereist voor de 8e kyu graad (witte band).

 The word Heian is a mixture of the syllables for Heiwan and Antei - 'Peacefulness and Calmness'. The meaning of the Kata signifies a 'Peaceful Mind'. The original versions of the Kata were named Pinan however Funakoshi Sensei, during the creating of the style changed Chinese and Okinawan names to Japanese conveying his philosophical meanings.

This is the 'first step' or Shodan, and required for the 8th Kyu grade(White belt).

 

 Heian Nidan  
Heian Nidan is de "Tweede Stap" in de serie van vijf Kata. Dit is een Shitei Gata voor de 7e kyu graad. (gele band).

Het is ook een verplicht kata (examinators keuze) voor 1ste kyu (laatste bruine band) en Shodan (zwarte band).

 Heian Nidan is the 'second step' of the five kata in the series. This is a Shitei Gata for the grade of 7th Kyu. (Yellow belt).

It is also a mandatory kata (examiner's choice) for 1st Kyu(Last brown belt level) and Shodan (Black belt).

 

 Heian Sandan   
De "Derde Stap" in de serie van vijf Kata. Dit is een Shitei Gata voor de 6e kyu graad (oranje band).

Het is ook een verplicht kata (examinators keuze) voor 1ste kyu (laatste bruine band) en Shodan (zwarte band).

 The 'third step' of the five kata in the series. This is a Shitei Gata for the grade of 6th Kyu. (orange belt).

It is also a mandatory kata (examiner's choice) for 1st Kyu(Last brown belt level) and Shodan (Black belt).

 

 Heian Yondan    
De "Vierde Stap" in de serie van vijf Kata. Dit is een Shitei Gata voor de 5e kyu graad. (groene band).

Het is ook een verplicht kata (examinators keuze) voor 1ste kyu (laatste bruine band) en Shodan (zwarte band).

 The 'fourth step' of the five kata in the series. This is a Shitei Gata for the grade of 5th Kyu. (green belt).

It is also a mandatory kata (examiner's choice) for 1st Kyu(Last brown belt level) and Shodan (Black belt).

 

 

 Heian Godan
De "Vijfde Stap" en laatste Kata in de serie. De Karate-ka zou nu genoeg basis technieken moeten hebben ontwikkeld om zich staande te kunnen houden in een gemiddelde "Zelfverdedigings" situatie, vanaf hier wordt het de "Vreedzame Geest". Dit is een Shitei Gata voor de 4e kyu graad (blauwe band).

Het is ook een verplicht kata (examinators keuze) voor 1ste kyu (laatste bruine band) en Shodan (zwarte band).

 The 'fifth step' and final kata in the series. The karate-ka should now have developed enough basic ability within the techniques to be able to handle an average 'self defense' situation, hence the 'Peaceful mind'. This is a Shitei Gata for the grade of 4th Kyu. (blue belt).

It is also a mandatory kata (examiner's choice) for 1st Kyu(Last brown belt level) and Shodan (Black belt).

Overgangs Kata  /  Intermediate Kata

 

Tekki Shodan
De afkomst van dit Kata is Chinees. In Okinawa bekend als Naihanchi. Funakoshi Sensei veranderde de naam in Tekki, duidend op "IJzeren Ruiter" en verwijzend naar het gebruik van kibadachi om een "ijzeren" (sterke) stand te ontwikkelen. Het kata ontwikkeld ook de taille en het bovenlichaam. Dit is een Shitei Gata voor 3e kyu (bruine band).

Het is ook een verplicht kata (examinators keuze) voor 1ste kyu (laatste bruine band) en Shodan (zwarte band).

 The origins of this kata are Chinese. Known as Naihanchi in Okinawa. Funakoshi Sensei changed the name to Tekki signifying 'Iron Horseman' referring to the use of kibadachi to creating an 'iron' (strong) stance. The kata also develops the waist and torso area. This is a Shitei Gata for 3rd Kyu (brown belt).

It is also a mandatory kata (examiner's choice) for 1st Kyu(Last brown belt level) and Shodan (Black belt).

 

 Bassai Dai
Bassai betekent "Het Fort Binnendringen", duidend op de innerlijke strijd om zelf controle. Het kata schakeld snel en gracieus over van verdediging naar aanval en de nadruk ligt op de heup bewegingen. Het woord "Dai" betekent groot en omvangrijk en verwijst naar de lengte van het kata en de omvang van de bewegingen. Van de twee Bassai kata is dit de eerste en originele versie.

Een Tokui Gata voor 2e kyu, 1ste kyu en Shodan.

Het is ook een Sentei Gata (verplichte leerling keuze) voor Shodan,Nidan,Sandan en Yondan.

 Bassai means 'To penetrate a fortress' signifying the internal battle for control of the self. The kata switches from defense to offense quickly and gracefully, and the emphasis is on hip movements. The word Dai refers to 'large' or 'great' indicating the length of the kata and size of movement. Of the two Bassai Kata this is first and original version.

It is also a Sentei Gata (mandatory -students choice) for Shodan,Nidan,Sandan,Yondan.

 

 Kanku Dai
Kanku betekent "Kijk naar de Hemel". De openings beweging "Naar de hemel kijken" symboliseert het universum en het concept van ku of "leeg" waarbij je de tegenstander laat zien dat je geen wapens draagt (zie Meikyo). Het is een gracieus en krachtig kata dat de voorloper was van de Heian Kata. Veel bewegingen en basis technieken van de Heian kata zijn duidelijk te zien.

Het is ook een Sentei Gata (verplichte leerling keuze) voor Shodan,Nidan,Sandan en Yondan.

 Kanku means 'To view the sky'. The opening movement 'looking at the sky' symbolises the universe and the concept of ku or 'empty' showing the opponent that you bear no weapons (Also see Meikyo). It is a graceful and powerful kata that was the forerunner to the Heian Kata. Many of the Heian movements and foundations can be clearly seen.

 Jion
Een Boedhistische term voor "Liefde" en "Goed". De Jion Ji was een tempel in China. Dit, alsmede de positie van de handen in Yoi duiden op de chinese oorsprong van het kata.

Een Tokui Gata voor 2e kyu, 1ste kyu en Shodan examens.

Het is ook een Sentei Gata (verplichte leerling keuze) voor Shodan,Nidan,Sandan en Yondan.

 A Buddhist term for 'love' and 'good'. The Jion-Ji was a temple in China. This plus the posture of the hands in Yoi indicate the Chinese origins to the kata.

It is also a Sentei Gata (mandatory -students choice) for Shodan,Nidan,Sandan,Yondan.

 

 Empi
Enpi betekent "Vliegende Zwaluw". De bewegingen zijn licht en dartel, duidend op de verdedigende vlucht van een zwaluw. Een oud kata met als origenele naam Wanshu.

Een Tokui Gata voor 2e kyu, 1ste kyu en Shodan examens.

Het is ook een Sentei Gata (verplichte leerling keuze) voor Shodan,Nidan,Sandan en Yondan.

 Enpi means 'Flying Swallow'. The movements are light and darting, indicative of a swallow's defensive flight. An ancient kata known originally as Wanshu.
